 it's true that some species of ants, particularly harvester ants, break down grains and seeds before storing them. They do this to prevent the seeds from germinating inside their nests.

Ants have evolved this behavior because if a seed were to sprout, it would be useless as a food source and could even damage the nest. Some seeds, like coriander, are known to germinate even when broken in half. In these cases, ants have been observed to break them into four pieces to ensure they cannot sprout. This is a remarkable example of an insect's ability to manipulate its environment for survival.
