Concert - Aruna Sairam 18th Dec 08

She may not be liked by people who claim themselves as purists. But the appeal she has got among her rasikas is something unexplainable. You will realise that yourself, after hearing this concert and her public relation among her rasikas is outstanding.

The accompanying artists are: Sri. H. N. Bhaskar ( Violin), Sri. J. Vaidyanathan ( mridhangam)Sri. S. V. Ramani ( Ghatam)Sri. B.V.S. Manian (Kanjira and Konnakkol)

SIR, I am surprised why critics shoud be sarcastic when they refer to rasikas classified as 'purist'.Carnatic music with all its atr forms is still a science. Is it a sin if you want to listen to its pure form?(That is bhava, raga, sruthi, bakthi, laya, and rakthi all in the right proportions)When aruna was singing wonderfully, there were no takers.I have many of her old recordings. When she tends to be hysterical, people are enchanted. when a performer wants the rasika to be totallt absolved,he are she need not have to resort to singing to the gallary.A few examples are annasami bhagavatar(when he is rendering a harikatha he never cried like balakrishnasastrigal but once in delhi an I A S officer started weeping wihout any embarassement because the rendering of vamiki ramayana was so touching.his brief mukhari, kedaragowla or devamanohari would invariably make you long for more.Similarly, alattur sreenivasaiyer did not have a gandharva saariram. But who can forget his sama, kuntalavarali or vachaspathi.Maduraimaniiyer's bhairavi,Brindamma's todi,GNB'S kalyani etc used to transport the rasika to a different orbit altogether.Four days back when sudharani was singing 'natakapriya',in ACADEMY the lady sitting in my front was humming chakravakam that too in a different sruthi! Do you say we should keep quiet?Aruna sairam can only excercise little constraint she can be very exotic.there shoud not be any talk during a concert.Otherwise it will become as noisy as a pattimanram natarajan
