Music season 2009

  • Carnatic music season has started in Chennai even before the rains.
  • Bharat sangeet utsav 2009 initiated the season from 1st November with not less than three programmes a day.

  • Sudha Raghunathan paid tribute to her Guru M (melody) L (layam) V (vidhwat) by singing the songs popularised by the Legend.

  • Thani by Umayalpuram Sivaraman was excellent in Sikkil Gurucharan' concert. I thought he almost forgot that Dr.S. Karthik is waiting with Ghatam. He was so inspired.

  • Ranjani & Gayathri wore the same coloured sarees and blouses to start with this season. They used to have lot of permutations and combination in their dress in previous years viz Ranjani's blouse colour will be of Gayathri's saree and vice versa etc.

  • Most surprising aspect was that nobody moved in the hall ( Naradha Gana Sabha with a capacity of more than 1000 seats)which had no empty seat, during the Visakha Hari's programme of "Gajendraq moksham" which started at 7.00P.M. and ended at 9.15.P.M. In all the other programmes, the hall appeared to be Ranganathan street.

Sir,

Your post quote:
Thani by Umayalpuram Sivaraman was excellent in Sikkil Gurucharan' concert. I thought he almost forgot that Dr.S. Karthik is waiting with Ghatam. He was so inspired.
Unquote...

Let me share an anecdote with you... This happened almost 30 years back and I can never forget this. It was the same Sivaraman on the mridangam... It was a concert by Sri KVN for Chembur Fine Arts and a local gentleman who is a vadhyar full time, was requested to accompany on the Ghatam... Sivaraman sir, played for about 2 mins and gave a break for the Ghatam who responded with about 2 mins too. Thereafter, it was Sivaraman sir all the way till the Tani avarthanam almost 24 mins of non-stop mridangam... After the Tani - almost 90% of the crowd left abusing Sivaraman sir for his high-handedness. It is true that he was and is one of the legendary artistes of all times, but, then he cannot silently abuse a Ghatam artiste merely because he is a local person. He could have very well denied him an opportunity on the stage. That would have been better. I am sharing this only for your knowledge and not for the general public...

Parameswaran Iyer

Mama, I think I saw you in Smt.Vishaka Hari's upanyasam. Were you sitting in the balcony? I think you wore a dark colored shirt(brown maybe?)? I maybe mistaken, please confirm.

Dear Srinivas, I was in the ground floor 7th or 8th row, and I am always in white, except in a very few occasions

Mr. Parameshwaran, sorry I clicked your comments by mistake to be published. This incident was full of his enthusiasm and I think he can't/won't behave like that to Dr. S. Karthik who is equally popular.
