Concert - Gayathri Venkatraghavan - 24th Dec 07

Some body in the concert said, " If at all anybody, who can make us forget M.S. it may be this lady". May be a bit exaggerated, but some of the moments made me to think of M.S. That is true. Time alone will tell. Enjoy this concert.

Quote of the year !

Conert - Savitha Narasimhan - 30th March 09

In her vocal recital to mark Dikshitar Jayanthi under the aegis of Saraswathi Vaggeyakara trust at Naradah Gana Sabha, Savita Narasimhan celebrated the spirit of Muthuswami Dikshitar's compositions with insight and poise.

Dignity was writ large on the presentation that began with "Swaminatha"(Nattai) complimented by fluid kalpanaswaras. The next piece was "Kanchadalayathaakshi" (Kamalamanohari). Sarvalaghu effectively guided swaras to the opening line of the Pallavi, "Arunachalanadham"(Saranga). The power of Dhikshitar's held you in thrall as "Chandram bhaja Manasa" (Asaveri) invoked the cool rays of Soma to bathe both artist and listener in a quiet luminiscence amidst a rendition redolent with bhavas.

While not aspiring for the exceptional, the Anandhabhairavi alapana was neverthless unexceptionable, reiterating enduring values through disciplined structuring and tradition bound sancharas. The beauty of " Kamalambaa Samrakshathu Maam" shone through Savita's articulation, her deep involvement highlighting the composer's plea for Devi's compassion.

A refershing wave of contrast rolled in with "Shankha chakra Gada pani(Poorna chandrika), with a quick swaraprasthara round.

In the main raga, Poorvikalyani, an intuitive search yielded rich bounty in the lower reaches anchored by definitive phrasing of gandhara.

In the tara sthayi, madhyamakala prayoga alighting on the shadja and open-throated exploration at the gandhara offered nuggets.

From among his profound compositions, it was the beautiful "Meenakshi memudham dehi" that Dhikshitar is siad to have chosen to immerse his conscious in, as he shed his mortal coil to merge with the Divine.

Savita's handling of this masterpiece proved that subtlety is her forte, an aspect echoed in the measured, soothing cadences of niraval and swarqa. Charulatha Ramanujam's violin strings spoke a language that mirrored the vocalist's creative vision while J. Vaidyanathan's command over percussive vallinam-mellinam was a perfect foil to the flow of melody.

Concert - Aruna Sairam 18th Dec 08

She may not be liked by people who claim themselves as purists. But the appeal she has got among her rasikas is something unexplainable. You will realise that yourself, after hearing this concert and her public relation among her rasikas is outstanding.

SIR, I am surprised why critics shoud be sarcastic when they refer to rasikas classified as 'purist'.Carnatic music with all its atr forms is still a science. Is it a sin if you want to listen to its pure form?(That is bhava, raga, sruthi, bakthi, laya, and rakthi all in the right proportions)When aruna was singing wonderfully, there were no takers.I have many of her old recordings. When she tends to be hysterical, people are enchanted. when a performer wants the rasika to be totallt absolved,he are she need not have to resort to singing to the gallary.A few examples are annasami bhagavatar(when he is rendering a harikatha he never cried like balakrishnasastrigal but once in delhi an I A S officer started weeping wihout any embarassement because the rendering of vamiki ramayana was so touching.his brief mukhari, kedaragowla or devamanohari would invariably make you long for more.Similarly, alattur sreenivasaiyer did not have a gandharva saariram. But who can forget his sama, kuntalavarali or vachaspathi.Maduraimaniiyer's bhairavi,Brindamma's todi,GNB'S kalyani etc used to transport the rasika to a different orbit altogether.Four days back when sudharani was singing 'natakapriya',in ACADEMY the lady sitting in my front was humming chakravakam that too in a different sruthi! Do you say we should keep quiet?Aruna sairam can only excercise little constraint she can be very exotic.there shoud not be any talk during a concert.Otherwise it will become as noisy as a pattimanram natarajan

Do not fail to read this and think from the age what you are in

I am 67. I have to regret through out my life, since no body sent me this mail, when I was young. All of you, at whatever age you are in now has got a chance. I do not want you all to regret in your life, because, I cannot see you suffering with regret, since I love you all

An autobiography of a middle class man - Chapter 5

I have written in the previous chapters, how my mother was encouraging me in my various activities such as writing stories and composing poems etc. She encouraged me to bring out handwritten magazine in our village and she was the guiding force in its presentation. She even used to suggest that how bold the titles should be, and what colour can be used for them.

After walking up and down four miles a day, you can understand, how tiresome it will be, to do even the home works and study the lessons. Yet, I used to find time for these extra curricular activities, only because of her encouragement.

Even before reaching High school i.e 9th standard, I started participating in public meetings, and staging dramas in school vacation days. My mother was everything to me and I started looking at her as God, and slowly my attachment to Gods and worshiping them was deteriorating.

This is the song I wrote when I was 20 years old about my mother. This was based on the song " yennamellam" rendered by T. M. Sounderrajan in "Maaman magal (?)" based on Sahaanaa Raagam.

In anupallavi, I have mentioned based on the myth that people with great virtue
( புண்ணியம்) will not have rebirth. The emphasis is on "Even after being born to you, if I have rebirth" means I will certainly not have a rebirth, after being your son. In spite of that, if there is a rebirth then let me be only your son again
