நான் பள்ளி மாணவனாக இருந்த போது, திருவாரூருக்கு கிருபானந்தவாரியார் வந்திருந்தார். ‘உயிர்களை கொல்லக்கூடாது’ என்று வாரியார் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.
அப்போது நான் எழுந்து, ‘இந்த உபதேசம் எல்லா உயிர்களுக்கும் பொதுவானதா?’ என்று கேட்டேன். அவர் ‘ஆமாம். ஆடு, மாடு கோழிகளை எல்லாம் சாப்பிடுவதற்காக ஆண்டவன் படைக்கவில்லை’ என்றார். நான் எழுந்து, ‘சிங்கம், புலி சாப்பிடுவதற்காக ஆண்டவன் எந்த உயிரை படைத்தான்?’ என்று கேட்டேன்.
அவ்வளவு பெரிய அவையிலே ஒரு சின்ன பையன் அப்படி கேட்டது தவறுதான். ஆனால் கேள்வியில் இருந்த தத்துவம் தவறானது அல்ல.(?) அதைப் புரிந்து கொண்ட வாரியார், ‘உட்கார் பிறகு சொல்கிறேன்’ என்று சொல்லி விட்டு தொடர்ந்து சொல்லும் போது, ‘அவர்கள் எல்லாம் வேறு ஆட்கள் என்பது எனக்கு தெரியும். அதனால்தான் நான் பதில் சொல்லவில்லை’ என்றார்.
பின்னர் அவர் பேசுகையில், ‘தாவரங்களை சாப்பிட்டால் உயிருக்கு ஆபத்து இல்லையா என்று பையன் கேட்பான். தாவரங்களை சாப்பிடுவதால் உயிர்களுக்கு ஆபத்தில்லை. முருங்கைக்காயை சாப்பிடுவதால் மரம் சாகாது. கத்தரிக்காயை சாப்பிடுவதால் அந்த செடி சாகாது. அது பாவமில்லை’ என்றார்.
நான் விடவில்லை. எழுந்து, ‘அய்யா, கீரைத் தண்டை பிடுங்கி சாப்பிடுகிறார்களே; அது முழுவதும் சாகவில்லையா?’ என்று கேட்டேன். எல்லோரும் கைத்தட்டினார்கள். இருந்தாலும் அந்த பெரியவர் மீது வைத்திருந்த மரியாதையை இன்றளவும் இழக்காமல் மாற்றிக் கொள்ளாமல் இருந்து வருகிறேன்.
ஏன் இவற்றை சொல்கிறேன் என்றால் இளமையிலேயே ஊறிய பகுத்தறிவு, (?)அதன் காரணமாக எழுகிற கேள்விகள் அந்தக் கேள்விகள் ராமாயணத்தைப் பற்றியும் வந்திருக்குமேயானால் வீரப்ப மொய்லி பொறுத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். “இந்த நூலில் பெண்ணுரிமை கருத்துகளை, ஏழை எளிய மக்கள் வாழ்வில் இருக்கும் கஷ்டங்களை எரிமலை போல அவர் வர்ணித்துள்ளார். அதற்காக நான் அவரை பாராட்டுகிறேன்'' முதலமைச்சர் கருணாநிதி பேசினார்.

I am translating this nonsensical speech, for the benefit of those who cannot read Tamil.
When I was a student, Kripaananda vaariyaar came to Thiruvarur. Vaariyaar was speaking " Should not kill living beings"
At that time I got up and asked "Will this preaching apply to all living beings?"
He said, "Yes. God has not created goats, cows and chickens for eating purpose."
I got up and asked " Which living beings are created by God for Lions and tigers to eat?"
It might have been wrong for a small boy to ask such questions in such a big audience. But there was nothing wrong in the principle/property of this question.(?)
Vaariyaar who understood this ( the brilliance(!)) said, "Sit down. I will tell you later." but continued, " I know these people are different. That is why I did not reply."
Then when he was speaking, he said,"the boy asked, Is there no danger for life if you eat vegetables. There is no danger for life if you eat vegetables, By eating drum stick, the tree won't die. By eating brinjal that plant will not die. There is no sin in it."
I did not leave at it. Again got up and said," Ayya. the stalk of greens are plucked with roots for eating. Is it not sin?" Every body clapped.

What an absurd statement and lie it could be! Just imagine. Vaariyaar says "do not kill living beings?" What is the brilliant question from Mr. Karunanidhi for it? "Whether the preaching applicable to all living beings?" Vaariyaar says, " yes. God has not created certain animals for killing and eating"
Let us take his story as true! Vaariyaar might have said that we i.e. human beings, should not kill living being. What is wrong in that? That was his principle. The brilliant Karunanidhi immediately represents for animals like lions and tigers. Vaariyyar never said that the animals like lions and tigers should not kill other animals. He was not preaching to animals. He was preaching to human beings.
And Mr. Karunanidhi wants us to believe that Vaariyaar did not have answer to this silly question. If I am not wrong, Vaariyaar with his versatile humour sense, might have said, " I was telling this to human beings; not for you. "
Then Mr. Karunanidhi poses another question comparing plants to animals. If Mr.Karunanidhi did not understand even after 80 years, the scientific basics that " animals have a far more complex structure than a plant. We (animals) are more able to control reactions. We have more complex requirements of growth" and claiming that his questions to Vaaryaar were excellent and brilliant and he could not answer to that goes to show how ignorant he is still in certain subjects. And there is a crowd to clap for such comments.

Neither I am great admirer of Kripaananda vaariyaar or against Mr. Karunanidhi, but I could not tolerate this sort of speeches by a Chief Minister who is not supposed to speak about a person who is no more to defend this statement or confirm this is true. Mr. Karunanidhi is regularly in the habit of quoting dead persons have told him this and that, of which, nobody can prove or say against.
