How to win over your boss?

One of the readers of my blog after reading “Delegation of Powers” raised a question “What to do when the middle level manager, who gets along well with his subordinates, but has almost always differences of opinion with the top boss, but forced to implement the decisions.

The very simple solution for the same is "Do the same to your boss, of what you expect from your subordinates." Many of us do not apply this and do not understand how your subordinates pleased you in similar situation

The boss

If you think you're working for a bad boss, you have plenty of company. Of 1,118 people who completed a survey at the Badbossology.com web site last year, "48 percent said they would fire their boss if they could, 29 percent would have their boss assessed by a workplace psychologist and 23 percent would send their boss for management training.

The dilemma faced by middle managers at all levels. is like a bewildered, hapless cat standing between a large, pointing, barking dog on one side and a small, distraught yapping dog on the other. When you were promoted or promised promotion, you were probably not warned about all the ways in which you would be “caught in the middle”. In this presentation, I want to talk about some of the ways in which you can be in the middle.

How can so many people be so unhappy with their bosses at the same time so many bosses clearly are trying to do a better job?

You

Most of us have a natural aversion to authority and tend to instanly dislike the boss. The common perception is that"he is always out to get me". In fact, it seems like his very job to make you suffer. You keep confronting him and constantly dream of boxing his ears or somehow making his job difficult for him.

Yet, despite the brewing squabbles and resentment, deep down you do realise that there is not much choice but to keep a decent relationship going with your boss. This is essential for your very survival and growth and hostility will only damage your careers.

Having an antagonistic relationship with your supervisor is a career killer. No matter, how skilled you are, if you don't have a good relationship with your boss, your job is not secure.

When requesting any modification to policies or procedures, you must first view the situation from a management perspective. Consider these three questions. How would this change benefit the business? What problems might the change create for management? How could those problems be avoided?

The study draws on Hofstede's concept and classification of national culture to predict that job satisfaction will be lower, job tension higher, and interpersonal relations poorer for managers in the high power distance,

Mid-level managers often end up in their positions because they were good at detail-oriented performance, not because they were trained as managers. The skills that boosted them into management may not be the ones they need to be successful in their new roles

New managers often struggle because they are moving from a job they mastered to a new arena where they have low competence and start to be judged not just by their own work but by the work of the people they supervise.”

I would tell some- one who is just entering management to understand, it is just as important to explain the ‘why’ as to manage the ‘how.’”

It takes different skill sets to be a boss as you move up. In supervising front line staff, you may need to be more involved with process. When you are managing senior executives, the challenge is to try to create understanding and align to a vision.

If your bosses are good, then you may actually function as a manager, but frequently the last word in "middle management" is a joke, because, while you have tremendous day to day responsibility, you aren't really in on management decisions that effect policy and procedure.

You, after all, are responsible for virtually all of their actions while they are under your immediate command, and you are expected to know what they are doing and how well they are doing it. If they screw up you may be held partially accountable. If there is a major screw-up and there is any way you might have possibly intervened, you better believe others will be out to get you even if your bosses support you.

Then, I have to be frank with you, there isn't much you can do except muddle through trying to think over each decision, every comment you make, as to the long range consequences. Try not to jump in with a short term "out" that you will regret later. After all, these are all people you'll be working with closely and who you will be counting on to back you up.

Remedies

Theboss is not often your enemy. The problem may very well lie with you as you subconciously resent taking orders and being told what to do. You have to learn to submit to authority and do what the boss says. This will lead to a more satisfactory relationship on both sides.

Try your best to please your boss, but do not overdo this, as most managers actually despise such behaviour. Look for opportunities to compliment his work and make him look good. Even if you don't agree with him always, behave professionally and subtly after suggestions, solutions, or feed back according to the situation. Attempt to clear the air as many times as simple misunderstandings can be the root cause of great conflicts.

Make the effort to get to know him by engaging in casual conversation whenever possible, without crossing the limit, i.e getting too personal.

Remember that no matter how draconian he may appear to you, the boss is also after all human. You often do not realise how much your bosses depend on you. They need cooperation, reliability and honesty from their direct reports. And if you have them, why should he hate you. You also do not realise how much you depend on your boss for links to the rest of the organisation, for setting priorities and for obtaining critical resources.

So treat him nicely while appreciating his pressures, recognising his concerns and understanding his objectives. Show you boss that you are on his side by working hard and being a dependable, crdible employee who is committed to the organisation's growth. Delivering consistent and quality results will show that you are not a slacker, but genuinely involved in your work. Also try to understand his preferred style of working and adjust accordingly, by accommadating the glaring differences.

You can actually turn your boss in to your ally by looking to him as your guide and even a mentor who can help you to succeed. Do not hesitate to discuss your work problems and seek advice on your career growth. (Always show the problems as common, by not making any particular person or department is the cause for the same). He will be happy that you trust him and value his opinion enough to act on it. thus further strengthening your relationship. But, be careful in all your expressions that you do not over act or it appears to be so.

Never ever gossip about the boss or your opinion about him even with your closest collegues, save it for family and close friends. At times, you will be surprised, how did it reach him

The trick is to treat you boss as your client. Pretend like you are in business, and that your boss is most important ( and quite possibly your most difficult) client, who give you maximum business.

Do not forget that your future is well and truly in your boss's hands. He will not only determine your promotion, raise your salary or assign you to a plum project on which you haveyour eyes on, but also is persumably the guy who will sign your next pay cheque.

Even if you have had a rocky relationship until now, it makes sense to rebuild the broken bridges by apologising for the previous bad attitude and making nice by making nice by sing the tips mentioned earlier.

And, once a healthy, compatible and productive relationship is in place, great things will always happen.

As I say all the time, but will say again: talk things through with your spouse and close friends, don't stuff your feelings.

To my younger readers

Dear Srinivas,

You inspired me to post one more article I read for benefit of youngsters like you.

Don't Neglect Your Body as You Develop Your Mind

Establish Life-Long Habits at a Young Age ( the photo is my inclusion)
For college and high school students, holiday brings a lot of activity. Between fun stuff (like football games, parties, dances) and much harder things (like midterms and research papers), it may seem like there is not much time left to exercise and eat right. It is not uncommon for students to let their health slide. Before you know it, it's January 1 and you're trying to figure out how to lose 20 pounds before going on next Break!

There is a better way to do this. By establishing some simple, healthy nutrition and fitness habits, you can avoid gaining weight and even have more energy for school and everything else.

On the nutrition side, focus simply on making the right choices. This can make all the difference. For example:
  • Eating a good breakfast will give you energy well into the day and will cut down on cravings later.
  • For late-night study snacks, try fruit or nuts instead of pizza or potato chips. By preparing ahead of time, you’re less likely to resort to unhealthy fast food when you’re in a pinch, and the healthier foods you eat will stabilize your energy levels throughout the day (and night).
  • Drink plenty of water. Water helps your body remove waste and even helps you lose weight by metabolizing fat. It also helps reduce hunger. Try to keep a water bottle with you all day and drink that in class instead of high-calorie drinks like soda.
It can be hard to find time for fitness. Some options include:
  • Use your school’s facilities with a friend. Most schools now have comprehensive fitness centers, so you might as well take advantage of them while they’re free (or close to it). Finding someone to go with will make you accountable so you’ll be more likely to keep going. Also, the gym can be a great place to meet new people.
  • Walk as much as you can. If you're on your way to lunch or class and have the time, walk instead of driving. Even if you’re running late, increase your speed. Not only will you make it to class on time, you’ll also be getting aerobic benefit.
  • Take breaks from studying to do some quick exercises for refreshment. Jumping jacks, crunches, push-ups, lunges, climbing stairs, or walking around the building can all be done in just a few minutes. Exercise breaks will also make your mind more alert and your studying more effective.
  • Play a sport. You don't have to be part of the school's team. Anyone can play pick-up games or participate in intramurals or club sports.
Remember, don't get down on yourself if you miss a week of exercising or need to eat pizza a few nights in a row. School may be a stressful time, but it can also be the best time of your life—and one of your healthiest. Just try to remember the good habits presented here and other ones you learn along the way.

As you practice them more, you’ll be more consistent. Plus you’ll have plenty of energy and reduce the stress that comes with school. High school and college are times when healthy habits are made, so put forth the effort now and reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle for the rest of your life.

Yours affectionately,
Mama

Since you are now in class +2

Dear Bhavana,

I should have posted this in the beginning of academic year itself. Better late than never. There are two types of students. One who studies with time table, other with the decision to read certain lessons on specific days and complete them. I do not know whether you have either of these plans.

Now you take a decision to whatever way you want, but divide them to small units. Please divide each unit atleast one and half hour.

You fully concentrate on that unit for half an hour and try to fully understand it. Then close your book and try to recall the whole subject what you read. Not necessarily in the same words in what you read. If so it will be mugging. Try to say that in your own language. Supposing your friend asks you about that unit, that she is not able to follow, so, if you tell her, how will you say,in the same pattern try to recall. This is called audio memory.

The next is video memory. That is writing down the subject what you read. This will be most boring job and you will feel that you have already mentally recalled it and why should you write it again. But, there is always a danger that what you think and tell, will not be the same when you write them down. So never write an examination without practicing the writing habit. When you put your signature you do not think of the spelling of your names. This is because of the habit. This habit is essential for writing the examination also and it will automatically come only if you practice writing the subject you study as often as possible. Only repeated writing will stay in the mind.

After writing down, now open your book and try to find out whether you have written all the points. If any point is omitted please write that also again and add to the exercise.

This is the method of revising all the subject in one lesson.

The second revision is writing an examination like for three hours. Take any previous year's question paper or the questions in your book on the subject. Write all the answers as though you are writing the examination without anybreak. Then you can self-correct and give marks to your answers. Now you will know where you have done mistakes and so you will not commit these mistakes while writing examination unless you really realize and put it in your mind. Normally these mistakes will be certainly more in your memory because you did this as mistake.

This practice will help you in two ways. One you learn to finish the examination withiin the specific time without omitting any question for want of time. This is called sense of allotment of time. This practice will help you to improve this habit. Second, this will create self confidence. However best you have prepared, there will be nervousness at the time of examination and will make you to forget the answers you know. If you practice like this, the examination will not be examination to you, but it will be a repetition of your exercise only.

Because the syllabus is very big you can't make a selective study. Your question paper preparatory will not have the same selective mind like yours. So, it is very important, that, even though there will be choice in the question paper, selective choice is very risk. The questions may be from the subjects you have omitted.

It is not necessary to read for five or six hours continuously. You can always relax in between. But the relaxing technique is more important.

You can go for a walk.
You can read a newspaper or magazine.
You can sleep for half an hour.
You can hear good music ( This point is added by Mr. Srinivas, one of the reader)

There is nothing wrong on these things. But the best relaxation is deep inhaling and exhaling. It reduces the carbon-dioxide in your lungs and increases the oxygen and there by you get fresh energy.

There are three more important things that you should avoid in this relation. they are 1. SEEING TV 2. Playing video games and computer games 3. TALKING OVER THE PHONE/MOBILE FOR HOURS TOGETHER

Because these three things, even though they take only half an hour or some more minutes, but the impact of these things will be there in the mind for many hours.

Night study may be good , because there will be fewer disturbances but you should certainly sleep six or seven hours a day. Even tea or coffee will not help night reading because they are only of temporary stimulation.

If you want to read in the nights, do maths. Maths will make your brain active.

Have more oil in the head and keep drying whenever it spills down from head. This will avoid sleep. ( do not forget to shampoo your head before sleeping)

Carrot or any salads may be your side dishes. Because to eat them you have to chew a lot which will prevent sleep. ( Do not go for items like chips or chewing items)

Please avoid rice and potato in the nights. They will not only induce sleep but also delay the digestive system.

Instead have Soya, egg, milk, paneer etc. Because, you cannot eat them more and will be able to eat half belly and so the stomach will not be heavy. As for as you body is concerned the need of the hour is only protein.

Two more important things.

Until your examination, do not eat outside or drink water outside. If you get fever or jaundice then you will not be able to atten the exam.

The another important thing is that since March, April, May are chickenpox season, it is very important to have the vaccination or prevent it.

After working hard and preparing for exam, you should remember the following things.

Attempt first the questions for which you know the answers. This will give lot of self-confidence. With this self confidence and commonsense you can write the answers to the other questions also.

Write clearly and neatly . Highlight the important points.

Try to finish the exams ten minutes before. This ten minutes is to correct the mistakes if any. Instead of 12 kg , if you have written 12 km, ten marks would have gone.

Verify the question numbers.

Do not compare your performance with others after the examination. Do not postmortem and compare with others. "I studied well and I have written well and so let me forget". This should be your policy. If you are confused by doing these things the following exam preparations will be affected.

When you get holidays in between the examinations, do not spend all these holidays only for the next exam alone. Spare some time for other subjects also.

Work hard. Look after your health. Write the exam boldly. The success is yours.

With love
Hari thaaththaa
