‘I only want to enjoy my childhood, ma’

(Dear co-parents, some of us might hear a small, fading voice making yet another attempt to reach us)

Inumella Sesikala

Amma, I don’t want to go to school.

I am just a child, Ma. I want someone to tell me stories and teach me. I want to watch tadpoles and butterflies and know what they eat, where they sleep. I want to climb a hill and catch a cloud to see what it is made of.

I want to wait with my hands in the stream and feel the fish swimming.

I want to run with the puppies, sing with the birds, and play with paper-boats in the rain.

I want to lie down on the soft green grass and hear the wind whisper.

Only then I want to learn more about them from the printed word.

Only after my imagination is fired, my thirst to know more has begun, a seed of ‘Why?’ is planted in my brain.

Amma, I feel trapped in the prison-like classroom. I feel my spirit slowly weakening with the monotonous teaching. Often, when I ask a basic question our teachers say, “No time for all that. Let us finish the syllabus.”

I get tired of studying just for marks without pausing to truly understand.

I want to go to the museum with my classmates and hear my teacher explain the stories of the artefacts.

I want plenty of nature trips where real Biology classes would be held.

I want to see colourful videos of volcanic eruptions and deep-sea dwellings.

I want our whole school to visit together the historic and cultural places in my city.

I want to learn astronomy after looking through a telescope once.

I don’t want to just read them in my textbooks; I want to see, hear, touch, smell and taste whatever I can. I want to experience.

Why can’t the school make at least one such trip every year?

And, I cannot stoop down anymore to carry my school sack. My back is ready to break. Why should I carry all the books everyday? Why can’t we have only two subjects per day? Or, why don’t we have lockers like in the Western schools? And, why should I squeeze in that over-crowded auto?

But, Amma, growing up no longer seems to be fun. I see only more of homework, winter projects, summer classes, weekly tests, monthly tests, quarterly, half-yearly and annual exams, external competitive exams, more tests, more competitions, more pressure, more stress…

When can I sing, paint, dance, swim, or cycle?

When I can just play cricket or even hide-and-seek?

What happened to that minimum sleep that you always say a child needs?

Why should I always study, study?

Amma, I am scared of increasing atrocities by untrustworthy teachers, ragging-raving seniors, acid-loving nuts, perverted adults…

Ma, right now, I don’t want to be a doctor, engineer or anything else.

I just want to feel safe and secure, play and learn without any stress before I become an adult like you.

I only want to enjoy my childhood, Ma.

Music season 2009

  • Shashank performed an excellent concert yesterday. He asked the audience " I am going to play varnam. Do you want Kambodhi or Sankarbaranam?" Audience responded unanimously for Kambodhi and he obliged.

  • Similarly after doing Aalaapna in Kalyaani, He wanted audience to say whether they want Eathavunaara or RTP and the response was for RTP and he performed.

  • The percussion artists are placed in a dilemma now a days when these concerts are to be completed in two hours. Parupalli phalgun and Dr. S. Karthik had to play aavardhanam together and finish it within five minutes.

  • T. M. Krishna and Sangeetha sivakumar really performed a fantastic Jugalbandhi singing together most of the songs.

  • Their RTP with 14 raaga aalaapnas and Sri viswanatham as Pallavi and 14 kalpana swarams apart from swaras in the krithi, was fantastic.

  • Hats off to Akkarai Subhalakshmi ( in violin) maintainig the Sruthi for both of them without any adjustments.

  • She was not given any breath, since she had to accompany both T.M.Krishna and Sangeetha's Kalpana swarams alternatively, as each one was performing different raagaas.

  • The final touch was taken from stanzas from Shaakunthalam as Viruththam followed by "Premaiyil" from the movie "Sakunthalai" (sung by G.N.B and M.S. S)with perfect carnatic mood.

Music season 2009

  • Carnatic music season has started in Chennai even before the rains.
  • Bharat sangeet utsav 2009 initiated the season from 1st November with not less than three programmes a day.

  • Sudha Raghunathan paid tribute to her Guru M (melody) L (layam) V (vidhwat) by singing the songs popularised by the Legend.

  • Thani by Umayalpuram Sivaraman was excellent in Sikkil Gurucharan' concert. I thought he almost forgot that Dr.S. Karthik is waiting with Ghatam. He was so inspired.

  • Ranjani & Gayathri wore the same coloured sarees and blouses to start with this season. They used to have lot of permutations and combination in their dress in previous years viz Ranjani's blouse colour will be of Gayathri's saree and vice versa etc.

  • Most surprising aspect was that nobody moved in the hall ( Naradha Gana Sabha with a capacity of more than 1000 seats)which had no empty seat, during the Visakha Hari's programme of "Gajendraq moksham" which started at 7.00P.M. and ended at 9.15.P.M. In all the other programmes, the hall appeared to be Ranganathan street.

Can you imagine yourself as this woman?

A woman who is interested in her own life.

A woman who embraces her life as teacher, healer and challenge.

A woman who is grateful for the ordinay moments of beauty and grace.

A woman who participates in her own life.

A woman who meets each challange with creativity.

A woman who takes action on her own behalf with clarity and strength.

A woman who has crafted a fully formed solitude.

A woman who chooses friends and lover with the capacity to respect solitude.

A woman who acknowledges the full range of human emotion.

A woman who expresses her feelings clearly and directly and who allows them to pass through her as naturally as breath.

A woman who tells always the truth.

A woman who trusts her experience of the world and expresses it.

A woman who refused to defer to the thoughts, perceptions and responses of others.
A woman who follows her creative impulses.

A woman who produces original creations.

A woman who refuses to colour inside someone else's lines.

A woman who has reliquished her intellectual safety and approval.

A woman who makes a powerful statement with every action she takes.

A woman who assets herself the right to reorder the world.

A woman who has grown in knowledge and love of herself.

A woman who has vowed faithfulness to her own life.

A woman who remains loyal to herself...regardless.

Varnams

There was constant demand from readers for varnams and since it may be useful to all the students of Carnatic music, I tried to post as many varnams as possible with the variety of artistsVarnam is a form of song in the Carnatic music repertoire. A varnam is a relatively long piece and can range from 30 minutes to up to an hour. It is usually set to Aadi or Ata tala. It is the center piece in a recital of music or dance. The lyrics are simple and consist mostly of long syllables and swara phrases of various lengths which bring out the essential features of the raga. It has two types: Taana varnam and Pada varnam.
Varnams are considered vocal exercises in a particular raga. The patterns in a varnam are considered to be characteristic patterns of a particular raga or scale. Varnams are considered the most complex of the vocal exercises in Carnatic Music. They are designed to help develop voice culture and proper control of rhythm. Indeed, varnams are often practiced in double and triple speeds and proper rhythmic control (tala) must be kept.

Type of varnams

Named for its thanam-like rhythmic qualities, tana varnams only have lyrics for the pallavi, anupallavi and charanam.[1]
With rhythmic elements like a padam, pada varnams are generally sung to accompany South Indian classical dance, including bharatanatyam.[2] Unlike the tana varnam which only has lyrics for the pallavi, anupallavi and charanam and swarams for the rest of the sections a pada varnam also have lyrics that correspond to the muktayi and chitta swaras of the varnam, so generally, pada varnams contain more lyrical content than a tana varnam.[2] The swaras in this type of varnam are suitable for intricate footwork.[2] Padajathi varnams are simply pada varnams that also contain jatis in it, making it again more suitable for South Indian classical dance.[2]

Contents of a varnam

The varnam is subdivided into several sections:
  • Pallavi: The first section of the Varnam, sung with lyrics or sahithyam.
  • Anupallavi: A sort of recapitulation, sung with lyrics or sahithyam also.
  • Mukthaayi Swaram: Sung completely with syllables—or swaras -- (like sa ri ga ma pa da ni sa). In Pada Varnas it is known as Mukthaayi Swaram-Sahithyam.
  • Charanam: Sung with lyrics
  • Chittai Swarams: Sung completely with syllables. In a Pada varnam, there are lyrics which correspond to the Charanam swaras. The swaras occur in several groups or stanzas.
Generally, a varnam is sung as follows:
  • Pallavi
  • Anupallavi
  • Muktayi Swaram
  • Pallavi (in double speed)
Repeat, then Pallavi sung in triple speed, or in original speed.
  • Charanam
  • Charanam Swara Group 1
  • Charanam
  • Charanam Swara Group 2
  • Charanam
  • Charanam Swara Group 3
  • Charanam
  • Charanam Swara Group 4
  • Charanam
There are generally 3–5 swara groups in every varnam. In a concert, the entire charanam section is sung at approximately 1.5 speed. Sometimes when repeating the Pallavi the Annupallavi and Muktayi Swarams are repeated in double or triple speed.
Varnams are generally sung in two varieties of talas, or metric systems, Adi Tala (8 beat cycle) and Ata Tala (14 beat cycle), where Ata Tala varnams are generally more complicated and advanced. In most of the Adi Tala Varnams the tala is placed in the 2 kalai version. So therefore each beat and finger count is placed twice.
Famous Varnams
Adi Tala Varnams include:
Ata Tala Varnams include:
The Arabhi ragam varnam is supposed to be the only longest piece with jantai and tattu prayogas.
The Valachi vachi varnam is a Navaragamalika composition. The "MATHE MALAYADHWAJA" is a very Unique Varnam due to the fact that the Chitte swara has two different types of sahitya arranged according to it. The first is a rhythmic poetry describing the king and has the Raja mudra and the second is a liting Solkattu swara which is very nicely embodied in expression by bharatanatyam dancers.
Please also see this LINK for many varnams in different talas. I will try to collect as many varnams possible, but the pity is most of the singers are repeating the same varnams in most of the concerts. Why don't they stop repeating the same varnams instead of trying new ones.

Do not ignore water.

Cheers for water!

NAMITA JAIN

Just as a car cannot run without gas or oil, the body cannot work without water

Water is the only drink for a wise man — Henry David Thoreau

For human lifewater is the most important compound. Water is second only to oxygen in importance to the body. It is an essential nutrient that is involved in every function of the human body. Just as a car cannot run without gas or oil, the body cannot work without water.

Hydrate your systemMost of us drink less water than what our body optimally needs. If the body is not sufficiently hydrated, the cells will draw water from the bloodstream, thus burdening the heart. Even mild dehydration prevents the kidneys from effectively purifying the blood. Minor health conditions such as constipation, dry and itchy skin, acne, sinus problems and headaches may develop as a consequence.

Make a conscious effort to drinkthe requisite amount of water, 8 to 10 glasses a day, and watch your health improve. Glowing skin, greater immunity and a re-energised body are the bonuses you will get to enjoy.

On an averagemost people consume only about 4 glasses of water — make a concerted effort to increase your water intake.

Tip:Each morning, when you wake up, mix the juice of half a lemon in warm water. Sip slowly, giving your body about 30 minutes to digest the warm lemon water before breakfast. This helps in stimulating bowels plus the lemon is a good source of vitamin C.

Did you know?

Water makes up more than two thirds of the weight of the human body

A mere 2 per cent drop in our body’s water supply can trigger signs of dehydration: fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focussing on smaller print, such as a computer screen.

Fruit and vegetable juices, coconut water and herbal teas add to the fluid intake, while tea, coffee and alcohol have a diuretic effect and therefore lead to water loss.

We lose about 1.5-2 litres of water on a daily basis. Water leaves the body through the following ways: urine, faeces, sweating and exhalation.

Water Works

This is what water does in the body

Is water the best drink for a workout?

In most cases, yes. If the water lost is not replaced, it will lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Electrolytes like sodium, chloride and potassium are lost in sweat as well, and therefore need to be replaced. When we sweat profusely, our fluid requirement increases.

Unless your workout is continuous and prolonged beyond an hour, sports drinks give no additional benefit over water. Sports drinks contain 5-8 per cent carbohydrates as well as necessary electrolytes. Beware of consuming concentrated juices or beverages immediately before, or during the workout, as it can cause nausea, abdominal bloating or abdominal cramps.

Water also transports nutrients and waste products in and out of cells. Maintains the electrolyte balance. Maintains body temperatures. Moistures the skin and makes it look younger. Necessary for all digestive, absorption, circulatory, and excretory functions.

How much water to drink?

Drink at least eight glasses daily. Drink more water – 10 to 12 glasses a day, if the weather is very warm or dry; if you are exercising, or taking certain medications.

If you drink alcohol, drink an equal amount of water.

Water Woes — too little, too much

Too little leads to dehydration, the symptoms of which are headache, constipation, yellow coloured urine, joint pains and lower back pain, fatigue, hunger pangs and hormonal problems.

Too much can be disastrous too! Water must be taken in balance with the body’s electrolytes. Excessive water intake disturbs this balance.

Excess water, also known as water intoxication (usually over 5 litres) can also cause problems. Though it is not common, it is something to be aware of. If the water content of the blood increases drastically, the salt content gets diluted. Hence, the quantity of salt available to body tissues decreases, which can lead to problems with brain, heart and muscle function. Symptoms like dizziness, nausea, apathy are observed.

Water Wonders

Weight Loss: The best nutrient for weight loss is water. It has no fat, no calories, no carbohydrates, no sugar. It is a great appetite suppressant. Often when you think you are hungry, you are actually thirsty. Drink plenty to help your weight-loss regimen.
