ARADHANAI CELEBRATIONS AT KANCHI-PHOTOS FOR DARSHAN

Mahaswamiji's 17th Aradhana Mahotsavam performed

The 17th Aradhana of His Holiness Pujyasri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Mahaswamiji, the 68th Pontiff of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam was celebrated with devotional fervor at Kanchipuram. The Aradhana celebrations commenced on 30th December with Veda Parayanam and homas.

On the 1st January 2011, Aradhana day, Ekadasa Rudra Japam and homams took place. Abhishekam was performed at the Adhistanam of Pujyasri Mahaswamiji, followed by Alanakaram. Group Singing of Pancharatna Kritis took place at 9.00 am.

The poornahuti of the homams being performed took place in the benign presence of His Holiness Pujyasri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya Swamiji. The sanctified water was taken and abhishekam was offered at the Adhistanam in the presence of His Holiness, who performed Deeparadhana.

Vasordhara, Poornahuti and Mahabhishekam at the Brindavanam was performed in the presence of His Holiness Pujyasri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya Swamiji and His Holiness Pujyasri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya Swamiji.Samparadaya Bhajans were rendered on the occasion.

His Holiness Pujyasri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya Swamiji offered the sanctified Akshata to the devotees for more than two hours. A large number of devotees took part in the Aradhana programme and received blessings of Pujyasri Acharya Swamijis.

His Holiness performed the Pradosha Puja in the evening. Following this, His Holiness led the devotees and took the Mahaswami Swarna Ratham (Golden Chariot) around the Adhistanam of Pujyasri Mahaswamiji. A vocal recital was held in the evening.

Do you know - Molokini

Landing on this island is prohibited, but it does not stop thousands of people fom floating around it each year. With water this amazing, who needs land.

The island is actually partially submerged top of volcanic cinder cone. What is a volcanic cinder cone?

If you make the trek to Maui, there is a good chance you will end up snorkeling around this rocky island. Better know where it is in case your boat leaves without you.


Molokini is a crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic crater which forms a small islet located in Alalakeiki Channel between the islands of Maui and Kahoʻolawe, part of Maui County in Hawaiʻi. It has a diameter of about 0.4 miles (0.6 km), and is located about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of Makena State Park and south of Maʻalaea Bay. It is a popular tourist destination for scuba diving, snuba and snorkeling.The islet is a Hawaiʻi State Seabird Sanctuary.

Popular dive spot

Molokini is one of the top 10 dive spots in the world. Snorkeling, scuba, and snuba tours depart from Maʻalaea Harbor and Kihei Boat Ramp.
Molokini's crescent shape protects divers from waves and the channel's powerful currents. However, experienced scuba divers will also drift dive off the 300 feet (91 m) sheer outer wall, using the channel currents to carry them along.
The crater houses a lush reef with excellent visibility as deep as 150 feet (46 m). Molokini is home to about 250 species of fish, many endemic (see Ecology below). The best conditions occur in early morning.
Because Molokini attracts many boats, the Hawaii State Division of Boating and Recreation established mooring buoys and "Day Use Mooring Rules" for Molokini to protect against damage from dropped anchors.
Its popularity has led many water-sport guides to lament that overcrowding has made the experience less attractive.

In Hawaiʻian legend, Molokini was a beautiful woman. She and Pele, the fire goddess, were in love with the same man. The jealous Pele cut her rival in two and transformed her into stone. The woman's head is supposedly Puʻu Olai, the cinder cone by Makena Beach.

History

Potassium-argon dating by Yoshitomo Nishimitsu of Kyoto University indicates that Molokini erupted approximately 230,000 years ago.^[4].
Archaeological evidence, primarily in the form of stone sinkers and lures, show that early Hawaiians visited Molokini to fish. They also likely harvested seabirds, eggs and feathers.
During World War II, the United States Navy used Molokini for target practice because its shape is somewhat similar to a battleship.^[5]. In 1975 and 1984 the US Navy detonated in-place unexploded munitions found within the crater, resulting in the destruction of large areas of coral. This resulted in a public outcry. A thorough search and risky manual removal of unexploded munitions to deep water was carried out by volunteer divers as a result. As well, a 2006 survey found no evidence of unexploded munitions on the islet itself.
During the 1950s commercial harvesting of black coral occurred in Molokini.
In 1977 Molokini islet, the crater, and the surrounding 77 acres (310,000 m²) of underwater terrain were declared a Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD).

Ecology

Molokini crater is home to approximately 250 to 260 distinct marine species. Most commonly observed among these are the Black Triggerfish, Yellow Tang, Moorish Idol, Parrotfish, Raccoon butterflyfish and Bluefin Trevally. Due to constant exposure to park visitors and the long history as a conservation district, the fish of Molokini are extremely comfortable with the presence of nearby divers. Small Whitetip reef sharks and Moray eels are occasionally seen in the crater.
38 different hard coral species can be found in the waters of Molokini, as can approximately 100 distinct species of algae.
The islet itself is home to at least two different species of nesting seabirds: Bulwer's Petrels and Wedge-tailed Shearwaters. Additionally Great Frigatebirds have been observed on Molokini islet.

Restrictions on Access and Activities

Molokini islet itself is federally owned and is a state seabird sanctuary. Thus unauthorized landing is prohibited. Permission to land must be obtained both from the U.S. Coast Guard and the Hawaii Division of Forestry and Wildlife ^[5]
Regulations covering the Molokini Shoal MLCD (see History above) prohibit fishing, collection or removal of specimens, and fish feeding within its bounds. Additionally, dropping anchor within the MLCD is not permitted due to the potential of damage to the coral reef. Tour boat operators have been allocated fixed mooring points instead.

I am remembered of my undergraduate study when I found the songs, Jivan Ki bhagia--Tere Mere Sapne, Aaj Madhosh hua jaye--Sharmilee, Gumn hia kisike pyar mein--Rampur Ka lakshman, Sa re ga ma pa--Abhinetri, Beegi Beegi ratho me--Ajanbhi, for this there is a remix which is also wonderful but the visual will be a bit obscene, Tere bina Zindaki--Aandhi. Aradhana song of course.I used to here through the radio, the programme being Jaya Mala of Vividh Bharathi. Myself and my friends were crazy over these songs. Even today, my dearest freind who has visited more than 30 countires and now at AIIMS, Delhi, whenever we contact never fail to make a mention of these songs. My dream of possessting these songs has come true because of the great man Sri Vaithinathan Hariahran.Only lovers of music could understand the feeling. Why is government reluctant to retrieve funds stashed abroad?

The Global Financial Integrity — a non-profit research organization working in the area of tax havens — has estimated that the present value of illegal financial flows of India held abroad is at least US$462 billion. This means that the money stashed abroad is nearly 40% of our GDP of US$1.2 trillion. When this became an issue before the last Parliamentary elections, some leaders in the ruling party denied the issue outright. But the current prime minister was gracious enough to acknowledge the gravity of the issue and promised action on coming to power. Since then the whole world has moved against the menace of untaxed money. But the Indian response has been just symbolic, like signing tax treaties, with no decisive attempt to get at the root of the problem.

As early as February 2008 German authorities had collected information about illegal money kept by citizens of various countries in the Lichtenstein bank and the German finance minister offered to provide the names to any government interested in the list. Our government did not take any action for many months and, only after much prodding by the opposition, asked for the list in late 2008. Recently it agreed, in the Supreme Court, in response to a petition moved by Ram Jethmalani and others that “18 Indians have put Rs43.83 crore in Liechtenstein bank”. The list is said to contain names of more than 100 Indians. Interestingly, in the case of Hasan Ali of Pune, who was found to have been operating massive Swiss accounts, the Union government indicated that tax demands of Rs71,848 crore have been raised on the said person, his wife and other associates. If this were the tax demand, then the income on which this would have been raised would be more than Rs1.5 lakh crore. Likewise, the IPL, 2G spectrum, Madhu Koda and CWG scam issues, all point to linkages to tax havens.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is not inclined to reveal even the “total volume of such money” to an applicant using RTI. During the hearing, ED stated that they cannot either confirm or deny media reports about the likely volume of black money stashed away in foreign banks illegally by Indian nationals.It is suggested that India is updating its double taxation treaty with many countries, including Switzerland. Actually the double taxation treaty is only a part of the solution. Many of these tax havens do not consider tax evasion by depositors in host countries as a crime. Also they have stringent laws to punish bankers providing any information regarding the depositors. Nearly 1 trillion out of 2.8 trillion of Swiss money is black money says Konrad Hummler, the Chairman of the Swiss Private Bankers Association. The steps needed to monitor and control funds which are diverted and used for terror financing from these tax havens also need to be looked at. As early as 2007 the concern was expressed by the then-national security advisor, MK Narayanan, about possibility of terror funds coming in through financial markets. A recent report suggests that “on instructions from finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, the Intelligence Bureau has taken up the task of identifying the sudden quantum jump in the foreign money flowing in the country through withdrawals by foreigners on credit and debit cards issued by the foreign banks.

In the last few years many countries in Europe as well as the US have taken several steps to get back their illegal funds from abroad. For instance, the US got names of more than 4000 clients of UBS bank from Switzerland after persuasion, threats and related legal actions. It has been successfully demonstrated by countries which attempted to recover the assets stashed abroad by their corrupt leaders and businessmen that this can be accomplished. There was a report in India Today (February 18, 2008) regarding foreign travels of Central ministers. It stated that a large number had visited Switzerland, including on personal trips and certainly not for skiing in the Alps. Given all these aspects why is the government not initiating any action?  

One possible reason could be the culpability of our leaders. There was a report in the Swiss journal Schweitzer Illustrierte, which did an expose on politicians of the third world and developing nations who had stashed their wealth in Swiss banks. In its issue dated November 11, 1991, the magazine, citing the newly opened KGB records, reported ‘that Sonia Gandhi, the widow of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was controlling secret account with 2.5 billion Swiss Francs (equal to $2.2 billion) in her minor son’s name’. Interestingly there has not been any defamation suit against the magazine nor any denial of that report, either by the government or by the oldest political party.

\The prime minister has announced to “redouble efforts” to “cleanse the system” in 2011. For a start, can he inform the nation about the total number of foreign trips — including personal trips — undertaken by his cabinet colleagues to various tax havens after UPA-2 came to power?
