Veenai Dhanammaal

Veena Dhanammal is the most prominent Veena player of 20th century and one of the most influential Carnatic musicians ever. Dhanammal was born into a musical family. Her grand mother Kamakshiamma was a famous vocalist and dancer. Her mother Sundaramma was trained by Subbaraya Sastri, son of Shyama Shastry. She was trained by a number of musicians, apart from her mother -Sathanur Panchanada Ayyar, Alasingarayya, Balakrishnayya, Dharmapuri Subbaraya Ayyar, Baldas Naidu of Wallajahpet and Saidapet Tirumalachariar. Her brother Narayanaswami was a famous violinist.

Dhanammal was an expert in Veena, but was equally good in vocal music. She used to frequently sing while playing on the veena. In time she developed an identifiable style of her own, what is now called Veena Dhanammal Bani. Raaga Bhaava was the main focus of her style. Gamaka-s were used where needed and she had a fine delicate touch. She never used Tanpura or Mridangam accompaniment as she believed Veena was a complete instrument. Musicians and rasika-s would flock to her house to hear her Friday concerts.

Concert - A.S. Dhandapani - Jalatharangam

Many in this generation may not even know that a song can be played on bowls filled with water, leave aside a concert.

What is the principle of Jalatharangam?

Made with several porcelain bowls filled with water, Jalatharangam is one of the oldest Indian traditional musical instrument. It is played in Carnatic music and quite rarely. The player hits the bowls with two small bamboo rods, and the volume of water contained in each bowl sets the pitch of the sound. Sometime a faint lapping can be heard between two crystalline notes.

A Really Moving incident!!

After a simple Temple Darshan we entered "Giri Trading" and started searching for this Book on Thatva Bodha..

We found many people buying various Books and CDs and from their smart walks and accumulation of CDs from Bhajans to Bombay Jaishree,sent a nice feeling in us,that,we have come to the right place indeed...
I was looking for this Book while my wife started collecting Bharathiar's songs and Ms's Music..I searched everywhere for this Book..
There was this Girl Kalaivani,standing next to the Cashier,sincerely watching all our movements..a Black Girl,should be from a nearby Village,might be 17 or 18,should not have crossed 8th Std.,Might be out of POverty she is here..all my Journalist's brain unnecessarily calculated about this Gullible Girl..and tho' she was repeatedly watching me,I ignored her and started searching for"Thathva Bodha"
I saw many books from"Sandhya Vandanam" to Swami VIvekananda's Chicago Speech" but having spent a good 40 minutes..I looked at her..she also looked at me curiously..
I asked her,knowing fully well that such a girl cannot have any idea of anything,leave alone Thathva Bodah..
"Sir,Shall I help you?"(in Tamil)
"Yes I am looking for Thatva Bodha?"
"Sanskrit Text or English /Sanskrit?"
God..she knows..
"Sanskrit& English"
"Do you like to have the PUblication from Chinmaya Mission or Indu Publications or by Ramakrishna Mutt?"
"I dont know..I just want to only Learn you see..I dont really know indeed"
"Do you read Tamil Sir?"
"Yes I am a Tamilian "
(thinking to myself how most of mylife time
I like to act in most otherplaces
that I am not)
"Then Sir,you can take this"..she ran to the Shelf where I had searched for 30 minutes,removed the books in the front side and came out with a Book in Tamil
"This one in Tamil by N.Sivaraman by Indu Publications infact is simple and wonderfullYou have the Sanskrit Text too inside.."
My God..Why did I under estimate such a Genius..Just because of my Arrogance that I am an NRI..
Or Just because I presumed such a Black,gullible girl,
who wd have come for this JOb out of absolute poverty,
wdn't have any idea of"Thatva Bodha"

I decided to change my attitude and realise that I am absolutely an 'Idiot' at this moment in front of this wonderful girl and submitted myself in all humilty..
"Madam,Ireally don't have any idea of even who wrote Thatva BOdha till Yesterday..I just attended a lecture on this subject and was fascinated by the lecture and hence"
"Did you attend Goda Venkateswara Sastri's lecture in BHarathiya Vidya Bhavan?"
"Oh God..How did you know?"
"He regularly takes classes on such subjects..infact he is one of the best Sir,in the city on such subjects"
"You are interested in such subjects?"
"Yes Sir,I read a lot about Swami VIvekananda and Ramakrishna and Thathva Bodha incidentally is my favourite Subject"
"You mean to say you have read Thatva Bodha.?"
"I have read this one by Sivaraman and once you read it you won't feel like keeping that book on the table at all.."
"Why what is so great about this Book?"
"Sir,you must be Joking that you don't know about Thatva Bodha.."
"Really I accept my ignorance.."
my wife was watching from the corner,admiring all her Cd collections..
"Sir,according to me if you read this it gives the entire Vedanthic Saramsam and one wd become a bit more humble in life..
leaving Ahamkaram once for all.."
"Is it a fact that reading this simple book one wd get so humble..
"Ofcourse one shd be involved totally into the text..
Needs lot of conviction and devotion.."

My wife joined the conversation and she felt this girl is indeed a very very talented intelligent girl..so she told me
"Why don't you interview her for Washington Post..why at all you shd think of Paris Hilton?"
I also felt that I owe something to her..so I asked her whether she can spare sometime for an interview..
She politely refused saying
"My boss is to give me permission..Besides many people are looking for guidance like you and hence I have to go.."
"What is your name anyway?"
"Kalaivani"..
My wife's admiration for her devotion to duty and her total involvement in her work..made her go direct to the Boss.."Sir,that girl Kalaivani.."
"Yes very hard working Girl.."
"This is my husband Viswanath .."
"Nice meeting you Sir"
"He is the Senior Journalist in Washington Post.."
Boss stood up.."Washington Post?"
"Yes Sir..I wd like to interview this girl..I am highly impressed..with her ethics.."
Boss called her..Time was 5:45 Pm...
"Kalaivani,they have come all the way from USA..they wd like to spend sometime with you..can you?"
"Sir,there are so many customers waiting for some guidance..
it is a rush time..if they can come again tomorrow.."
"OK OK I can come again tomorrow.."
I again came next day morning leaving all my appointments with Times of India just to see this girl..It was no rush hour..
My wife and myself found out....

Kalaivani is from a nearby village near Arcot..She has 5 sisters..She is the eldest one..Her father was a drunkard and he died a few years ago caring for none of them..Her mother used to work as a helper in Masonry and passed away two years back..leaving all the 6 on the streets..
This girl who had completed her 9th std decided to search for a job and Giri Trading came forward to help her out..She brought all her 5 sisters with her and with her meagre salary she is taking care of them..all the 5 sisters are going to a nearby corporation school..
"Kalaivani..but when did you get this enthusiasm to learn about Thatva Bodha?"
"Sir after joining here,I decided that the best way to be of help to the customers is to know the subject first..I took small Books on Swami VIvekananda and started reading..I found the subject so fascinating..I decided to read other books in Tamil like Bagavad Gita and Viveka Choodamani..Thats how.."
"What is your salary?"
"Rs 2500..Sir"
"Are you able to manage all your expenses with the 5 sisters..?"
"Not at all Sir but the Boss helps me a lot..?"
"What is your aim in LIfe?"
"I want all my sisters to get education..
then they wd get easily employments is it not?"
"If I give monthly Rs 10000 for meeting all your expenses..wd that suffice..?"
"It is indeed too much but that also I wd accept only thro' my Boss.."

We took her to the Boss and told him that we wd like to send Rs 10000 every month so that all her sisters' education wd be completed..Boss said
"She deserves it Sir..You can trust me I will hand over the amount to her every month or alternately you can open an acct in her name and start transferring.."

My friend John Paul,
who is the Regional Manager of Times of India had also come with me..He said"You have done a good thing.."
My wife said"I pray that Karpagambal helps Kalaivani to become an expert in Vedantha and start giving lectures in USA..
We can arrange for her lectures.."
We left wonderstruck....If we go into the interiors of BIhar and Barrackpur..how many moreJewels can be found..
I really became humbled

As a matter of fact when I received this mail, I wanted to go to Giri Trading and take a photo of Kalaivani to post this matter in the blog. But the heart moved faster than my brain, and I posted the matter immediately without verifying the fact. As a matter of fact I wrote back to Ms. Hemalatha that I will go and help my mite to this poor girl. However, if Kalaivani is there and she has five sisters and they deserve some help we can do our mite, since we do not get even such opportunities to help. To be frank, I had an iota of doubt, when I read that Kalaivani is just a sales assistant and she gets Rs.2500/- per month, at Giri Trading (the amount of salary gave me bit of surprise) but the way in which the story was written all these doubts were pushed away. Any how you should appreciate the story and its author for the narration( if it is not true)

Is not India shining?

Enough is said in all the media, how persons like Mr. Kalmadi have placed India into shame, in all possible ways. However, in spite of all their efforts, we came out with flying colours in yesterday's opening ceremony. And here are some echoes to my feelings.

"India has arrived" this summed up the international media comments on the dazzling opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi on Sunday.

Newspapers in two major Commonwealth countries, Australia and Great Britain, used terms like 'An ancient land opens its heart to the world', 'India opens doors to the world at opening ceremony' and 'India sweeps aside Games shame' to describe the two-hour cultural extravaganza that unfolded at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium last night.

People across Britain watched the ceremony live on BBC and were all praise for it with NRI Industrialist Lord Swraj Paul summing up the public reaction by stating, "India has done itself proud. It was a great show."

The Guardian newspaper said it was a moment of national pride for India, which had drawn flak for the troubled build-up to the Games.

"'India has arrived': spectacular ceremony opens Commonwealth Games," read the newspaper's headline.

"Concerns of recent weeks forgotten as dazzling event launches games amid atmosphere of national pride and celebrations," it said.

The little known facts of the CWG Opening Ceremony

About 1,200 moving lights, 25 stacks of speakers and about 2,700 shots of fireworks spread across the roof of the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium combined with a stage weighing 500 tonnes to create a spectacular opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games here today. The gigantic main stage, inspired by the ''mandala'', a sanskrit word for the geometric designs symbolic of the universe in Hinduism and Buddhism, which is one of the largest built for an opening and closing ceremony.

The stage was built within seven days by about 500 workers. Weighing an approximately 500 tonnes.
The stage is large enough to hold 500 people under it. The opening ceremony would have never been that spectacular had it not been for the lighting arrangements.

1,200 moving lights, 120 space cannons and 16 follow spots weighing approximately 75 tonnes was what it took to enchant the about 60,000 spectators. The 25 stacks of speakers produced 500,000 Watts of sound.

If one was impressed by the fireworks, it was because of the 2,700 shots spread over 88 locations on the roof of the stadium. The crowd had erupted in joy as the firecrackers went up in air heralding the beginning of the Games.

The entire system was supported by over 50 km of power cables that were used to provide constant power for the opening ceremony.

I am proud of my country and salute to all those who made it possible.

Concert - Sikkil Gurucharan

This was a concert when Sikkil Gurucharan was a rising star. There are at least about 200 rasikas at Madras who made it a point to attend all his concerts, irrespective of the area of his concert. They enjoyed his concerts and appreciated by clapping to every song as much as possible. HE BECAME VERY POPULAR IN SHORT TIME. This concert was at RK mutt school, where he studied (6th November 2007). The students in great number turned out, appreciated and enjoyed his concert. See their enthusiasm when he was singing "Vaanaththin meedhu", all the students clapping in unison without disturbing the song. I do not know whether he remembers those days now, we fans carry those pleasant memories.

An inscription and a Greek account fix Muhammad's birth in 552, not
570. Muhammad's career took place not in Mecca but hundreds of
kilometers to the north. Yehuda Nevo. The classical Arabic language
was developed not in today's Saudi Arabia but in the Levant.

Long before Islam came in to existence, Kaaba, in Mecca in Saudi
Arabia was a pilgrimage site. The word Kaaba might have come from
the Tamil Language which originated around 1700BC. In Tamil Nadu
Kabaalishwaran temple is Lord Shiva's temple and Kabaali refers to
Lord Shiva. The black stone at Kaaba is held sacred and holy in
Islam and is called "Hajre Aswad" from the Sanskrit word Sanghey
Ashweta or Non-white stone. The Shiva Lingam is also called Sanghey
Ashweta. So what is in Kaaba could be the same what Hindus worship.

The pedestal Maqam-E-Ibrahim at the centre of the Kaaba is octagonal
in shape. In Hinduism, the pedestal of Brahma the creator is also
octagonal in shape. Muslim pilgrims visiting the Kaaba temple go
around it seven times. In no other mosque does the circumambulation
prevail. Hindus invariably circumambulate or Pradakshina, around
their deities. This is yet another proof that the Kaaba shrine is a
pre-Islamic. In Shiva temples Hindus always practice
circumambulation or Pradakshina. Just as in Hinduism, the custom of
circumambulation by muslim pilgrims around the entire Kaaba building
seven times shows that the claim that in Islam they don't worship
stones is not true.

Allah was one of the deities in Kaaba long before Islam was founded.
It might come as a stunning revelation to many that the word `ALLAH'
itself is Sanskrit. In Sanskrit language Allah, Akka and Amba are
synonyms. They signify a goddess or mother. The term `ALLAH' forms
part of Sanskrit chants invoking goddess Durga, also known as
Bhavani, Chandi and Mahishasurmardini. The Islamic word for God is.,
therefore, not an innovation but the ancient Sanskrit appellation
retained and continued by Islam. Allah means mother or goddess and
mother goddess.

The King Vikramaditya inscription was found on a gold dish hung
inside the Kaaba shrine in Mecca, proving beyond doubt that the
Arabian Peninsula formed a part of his Indian Empire. (Ref: page 315
of a volume known as `Sayar-ul-Okul' treasured in the Makhtab-e-
Sultania library in Istanbul, Turkey). King Vikrama's preachers had
succeeded in spreading the Vedic Hindu sacred scriptures in Arabia
and Arabs were once followers of the Indian Vedic way of life. The
annual fair known as OKAJ which used to be held every year around
the Kaaba temple in Mecca and the present annual hajj of the Muslims
to the Kaaba is of earlier pre-Islamic congregation. . Even to this
day ancient Siva emblems can be seen. It is the Shankara (Siva)
stone that Muslim pilgrims reverently touch and kiss in the Kaaba.

Muslims shave their head and beard and don special sacred attire
that consists of two seamless sheets of white cloth. One is to be
worn round the waist and the other over the shoulders. Both these
rites are remnants of the old Vedic practice of entering Hindu
temples clean and with holy seamless white sheets. According to the
Encyclopedia Britannica, the Kaaba has 360 idols. Traditional
accounts mention that one of the deities among the 360 destroyed
when the place was stormed was that of Saturn; another was of the
Moon and yet another was one called Allah. That shows that in the
Kaaba the Arabs worshipped the nine planets in pre-Islamic days. In
India the practice of `Navagraha' puja, that is worship of the nine
planets, is still in vogue. Two of these nine are Saturn and Moon.
In India the crescent moon is always painted across the forehead of
the Siva symbol. Since that symbol was associated with the Siva
emblem in Kaaba it came to be grafted on the flag of Islam.

The Hindu Vedic letter in Sanskrit "OM" if seen in a mirror one can
see the Arabic numbers 786 and this is the most sacred number for
Muslims and copies of the Arabic Koran have the mysterious figure
786 imprinted on them. In their ignorance simply they do not realize
that this special number is nothing more than the holiest of Vedic
symbols misread and none of the Arabic scholar has been able to
determine how they chose 786 as the sacred for them. In short
muslims are also going around Siva Lingam at Kaaba, seven times as
Hindus go around it seven times.

A few miles away from Mecca are a big signboard which bars the entry
of any non-Muslim into the area. This is a reminder of the days when
the Kaaba was stormed and captured solely for the newly established
faith of Islam. The object in barring entry of non-Muslims was
obviously to prevent its recapture. Kaaba is clothed in a black
shroud. This custom also originated from the days when it was
thought necessary to discourage its recapture by camouflaging it.

Another Hindu tradition associated with the Kaaba is that of the
sacred stream Ganga (sacred waters of the Ganges river). According
to the Hindu tradition Ganga is also inseparable from the Shiva
emblem as the crescent moon. Wherever there is a Siva emblem, Ganga
must co-exist. True to that association a sacred fount exists near
the Kaaba. Its water is held sacred because it has been
traditionally regarded as Ganga since pre-Islamic times (Zam-Zam
water).

GOD definition: 1.God will not have any body like us. Ex:We cann't claim Sri krishna, Sri Rama as God. They are deities. We have 33 crore deities in Hinduism. 2.God will not take the birth from mother's womb as we/deities take. The interesting kowledge they give you when you go to their institution(free of cost), enlightens a lot. I wish you should visit once to the nearest Brahma Kumaris Institution...... A girl of 11 years old, by Name MS. Sharada from USA has rendered the songs rendered originally by Maharajapuram Santhanam.

1. She has handled ragas such as Bageshri, Durga and Yamuna Kalyani with much finesse and polish that you have to listen to it yourself to believe it.

2. The songs rendered has been slightly modified from its original version sung by Late Shri Maharajapuram Santhanam. There is an impressive new added Chitteswaram in Ranjini.

3. In some of the songs she blazes through with double speed that is very clear, accurate and on time.
