Dhevagaandhaari

Devagandhari (pronounced devagāndhāri, Sanskrit: देवगांधारि Tamil: தேவகாந்தாரி) is a raga (musical scale) in Indian classical music. It is used in the Sikh tradition of northern India and is part of the Guru Granth Sahib. In the South Indian classical music, Devagandhari is ajanya raga (derived scale), whose melakarta raga (parent scale, also known as janaka) is Shankarabharanam, 29th in the 72 Melakarta raga system.

Structure and Lakshana

Ascending scale with Shadjam at C

Descending scale with Shadjam at C
Its ārohaṇa-avarohaṇa structure (ascending and descending scale) is as follows (see swaras in Carnatic music for details on below notation and terms):
Devagandhari ragam is an owdava-vakra-sampurna raga meaning, in arohana 5swaras come (so it is called owdava) and in avarohana all swaras come (sosampurna), and there is a "zigzag" pattern of notes (so vakra). The notes used in this ragam are shadjam, chathusruthi rishabham, antara gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, panchamam, chathusruthi dhaivatam and kakili nishadham. This ragam sometimes includes the kaishika nishadham (anya swara - a note external to the scale, making this a bhashanga ragam).
The closest raga to this one is Arabhi. Some of the things that makes Arabhi different (though both share the same ascending and descending scale, in terms of basic notation) are:
  • Devagandhari is sung with gamakas and vilambita kala prayogas (usages with elongated notes)[1]
  • Devagandhari is sung with dheerga gandharam (elongated G3)[1]
  • Devagandhari is a bhashanga raga, and certain prayogas use the kaishika nishadham: S N3 D N2 , , D P

Why do we light a lamp?

In almost every Indian home a lamp is lit daily before the altar of the Lord.  In some houses it
is lit at dawn, in some, twice a day – at dawn and dusk – and in a few it is maintained
continuously - Akhanda Deepa.  All auspicious functions commence with the lighting of the
lamp, which is often maintained right through the occasion.

Light symbolizes knowledge, and darkness - ignorance.  The Lord is the "Knowledge Principle"
(Chaitanya) who is the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge.  Hence
light is worshiped as the Lord himself.

Knowledge removes ignorance just as light removes darkness.  Also knowledge is a lasting
inner wealth by which all outer achievement can be accomplished.  Hence we light the lamp
to bow down to knowledge as the greatest of all forms of wealth.

Why not light a bulb or tube light?  That too would remove darkness.  But the traditional oil
lamp has a further spiritual significance.  The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes our vaasanas
or negative tendencies and the wick, the ego.  When lit by spiritual knowledge, the vaasanas
get slowly exhausted and the ego too finally perishes.  The flame of a lamp always burns
upwards.  Similarly we should acquire such knowledge as to take us towards higher ideals.

Whilst lighting the lamp we thus pray:

Deepajyothi parabrahma
Deepa sarva tamopahaha
Deepena saadhyate saram
Sandhyaa deepo namostute

I prostrate to the dawn/dusk lamp; whose light is the Knowledge Principle (the Supreme
Lord), which removes the darkness of ignorance and by which all can be achieved in life

Thank Mr. Varadarajan Raju

...that life begins now -- right now -- not tomorrow or
the next day or the next.

Every minute of every hour of every day, life begins
anew. That means everything can change in an instant.
It also means you can have a new beginning whenever
you want.

Why put off for one day that decision you've been
pondering...aren't you just putting life itself on hold?

...that you should act like you expect to get into the
end zone.

Football coach Joe Paterno said that, and boy, did
he have it right. Nothing substitutes for positive thinking.
Nothing. It is more powerful than all the money, all the
influence, all the 'friends in high places' on earth.

You only need one friend in high places--and you already
have that. So go ahead, expect to get into the end zone.
You'll find that you do, 90% of the time.

respected sir, the inclusion of very old 78rpm songs are the feast to the rasikas. Especially the thodi rtp where Sri.Chowdiah's thaanam from where Kunnakudi likes got the string-plucking playing technic shows the mastro was years ahead of his time. Please ensure in the link 56 title to be 'Sree Rama Manthram' and pl. try to post the song Saraseeruha of 78rpm version where Chembai's alapana is entirely different, though crisp and totally different from other greats' interpretations. Also no.70 song's raga is Kalyani and ot Sankarabharanam. Namaskarams.

respected sir, the links which includes the old 78rpm kucchery set records era in feast to rasikas. Just withi the ambit of 3/6 &5/10 minutes of old records see the showcasing of the mastery of the Doyan. Chembai, Chowdiah and PMI trio were undisputable team of those years. in the listings item 56 to be labelled as "Sriram manthram", and if you post the titled song saraseeruhasana where the take-off of the very crisp alapana still ringing in my ears which i heard some 40 years back. Also the raga tag for item no. 70 may kindly be changed to Kalyani, not Sankarabaranam. Regards and thanks for your yoemen service
