Many in this generation may not even know that a song can be played on bowls filled with water, leave aside a concert. What is the principle of Jalatharangam
Made with several porcelain bowls filled with water, Jalatharangam is one of the oldest Indian traditional musical instrument. It is played in Carnatic music and quite rarely. The player hits the bowls with two small bamboo rods, and the volume of water contained in each bowl sets the pitch of the sound. Sometime a faint lapping can be heard between two crystalline notes.
